Evidence-based Treatment Timing in Orthodontics - Tiziano Baccetti, D.D.S., Ph.D.

This course is designed for pediatric dentists who provide orthodontic treatment and for those who refer to orthodontists. This course will utilize contemporary literature to address an issue that confronts pediatric dentists on a daily basis - when should orthodontic treatment of Class II and Class III malocclusions begin to be the most effective and most efficient? We will discuss the advantages to starting orthodontic and orthopedic treatment at the optimal time based on the results of 15 years of clinical research. The use of a reliable biologic indicator of skeletal maturity, the Cervical Vertebral Maturation method (CVM), is highly recommended to identify periods of peak growth. Knowing when periods of peak growth will occur is a critical component of orthodontic and orthopedic decision-making and allows for improved treatment outcomes. Highlights of this course include: Class II correction is more efficient and effective when it includes the peak in mandibular growth; Class III correction using maxillary expansion and protraction is more efficient and effective only when it precedes the peak in mandibular growth; Class III correction of the mandible is effective when it occurs during pre-pubertal and pubertal stages; and, maxillary expansion is more effective during pre-pubertal stages. Come and join us as we use peer-reviewed science to gain insight into a topic that has been influenced by dogma for decades.
